Three of the leading causes of skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of this malignant disease. It is commonly caused by skin exposure to the sun. Before talking about the three leading causes of skin cancer, let’s take a look at the different types of skin cells and their essential functions. The upper layer of the skin is called the epidermis, and it has three main types of squamous, basal and melanocyte cells. Below the squamous cell layer are basal cells, which act as generators of new cells. These cells produce melanin, a dye pigment that determines the tone of your skin. This pigment also plays a vital role in protecting the skin from harmful UV rays.

1. UV radiation

An important cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet radiation from the sun. It is caused by long or short term exposure to these harmful rays. The 2 common types of UV rays that affect the skin are UVA and UVB rays. It is known that both types of sun rays cause cancer. How do these rays work to damage skin cells? 3. Skin conditions

Those who suffer from skin conditions are prone to this form of cancer, since the skin cells are already weak and can easily be affected by carcinogens. Psoriasis, solar keratosis, Gorlin syndrome, xeroderma pigmentosa and eczema may increase the risk of skin cancer. These skin conditions alone do not cause skin cancer, but they could accelerate the formation of cancer cells as they weaken skin cells and reduce their natural ability to repair and renew.
